Song-Poems

I have kept a diary since the age of seven (1957) and, since 1965, a notebook (wordbook) in which I write poems when I’m in the mood.

In the early-70s these poems were occasionally published, but they were overwhelmed by Robert Wolfgramm’s music – as my poetry gained much better acceptance with musical backing or as the lyric for a song.

Without the constraints of ‘being a poem’ I kept jotting down these rhymes to which a lot of people wrote tunes. Sometimes I too wrote a tune, but as it was ‘always the same tune’ I felt the songpoems fared better in the hands of other musicians.

I have never heard – say – 25 per cent of the songs on the following list. I probably never would have known about them, had I not compiled this list for the Internet.

Some songs have been set to music more than once, for example Communist Girls which has three tunes – by Robert Wolfgramm, Carrl Myriad and Allan Broadhurst respectively. Likewise Queensland Lady with version 1 - a tune I wrote and version 2 - Mick Reid’s tune. Etc.
